<p><span class="trx_addons_dropcap trx_addons_dropcap_style_2">H</span>ow best to describe the recent Club Trip to Rotorua and Ngongotaha.&nbsp;WET!&nbsp;Sometimes the forecasters predict atrocious weather and it turns out beautiful, as happened on the February Ngongotaha Trip, but sometimes they are 100% correct. We got smashed down there with almost constant rain while Auckland had a beautiful sunny weekend.</p>

<p><strong><em>(Pic above &#8211; Andrew&#8217;s Rainbow that he had caught 10 minutes earlier but had broken him off on a log, Only to catch it again and get his flies back! )&nbsp;&nbsp;</em></strong>This resulted in flooded rivers and some hard fishing on the Friday – Saturday – Sunday. Thursday was the saving grace for those of us lucky enough to get away early as despite the rain the river stayed clear the whole day, allowing us to land good numbers of Trout.</p>

<p><em><strong>(Pic above &#8211; Fikrit&#8217;s 2nd Brownie fully coloured up)&nbsp;&nbsp;</strong></em>Most of the fish&nbsp;had been in the river a while and were quite coloured up and thinking about spawning.</p>

<p><strong><em>(Pic above&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;Laurie with his Bovine Excrement Removal Tool – due to the large about of BS being spread. Of which it should be noted, he was a prime perpetrator)&nbsp;&nbsp;</em></strong>Well, these things happen and all you can do is make the most of it. Perserverance, eventually paid off for most, with some heading to distant Lakes like Okataina and others choosing to hunker down with a good book by the fire and wait for the river to become fishable again.</p>

</figure>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>1:&nbsp; This presentation explains how to use available light, the rule of thirds and other principals of composition to get the best photos possible with any camera.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide3_21-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22353" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide3_21-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide3_21-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide3_21-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide3_21-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide3_21-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide3_21-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide3_21-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide3_21.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>2:&nbsp; This first thing to do before you take a photo is think about the light. Ask yourself where is the sun in relation to my subject?</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide4_11-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22354" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide4_11-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide4_11-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide4_11-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide4_11-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide4_11-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide4_11-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide4_11-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide4_11.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>3:&nbsp; Having the sun behind your subject (backlighting) is not a good idea.&nbsp; No camera can handle the bright and dark parts well enough to give you a good photo. Your subject will end up dark and your background bright plus you may get some bad artifacts and lens flare.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide5_21-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22355" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide5_21-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide5_21-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide5_21-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide5_21-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide5_21-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide5_21-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide5_21-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide5_21.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>4: With the sun coming from either side of your subject, you will get a little bit more pleasing image, but the shadows can be a bit harsh.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide6_11-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22356" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide6_11-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide6_11-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide6_11-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide6_11-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide6_11-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide6_11-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide6_11-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide6_11.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>5: With the sun behind you at around 45 degrees you will have pleasing shadows on the subject and is not too bright for them to look at. This is the ideal position. The sun directly behind the photographer can be very unpleasant for your subject to look into and creates very flat lighting with no shadows.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide71-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22357" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide71-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide71-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide71-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide71-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide71-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide71-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide71-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide71.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>6:&nbsp; The midday sun can cause problems when wearing a hat.&nbsp; Take it off before the photo if you can.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide81-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22358" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide81-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide81-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide81-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide81-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide81-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide81-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide81-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide81.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>7:&nbsp;&nbsp;Cloudy days can help. With a generally diffuse light all round it can be much easier to get well-lit photos. Still watch out for the bright background.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide91-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22359" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide91-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide91-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide91-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide91-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide91-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide91-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide91-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide91.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>8:&nbsp;&nbsp;Be careful of putting your subject in the shade when the background is bright. You will get the same problem as with the sun behind you.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide101-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22360" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide101-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide101-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide101-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide101-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide101-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide101-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide101-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide101.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>9:&nbsp; If you are careful you can create nice images with a shaded background by moving your subject into a sunny spot.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide111-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22361" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide111-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide111-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide111-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide111-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide111-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide111-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide111-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide111.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>10:&nbsp; This is what can be achieved in the shade. Your camera is more likely to expose your subject correctly in this scenario.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide121-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22362" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide121-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide121-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide121-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide121-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide121-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide121-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide121-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide121.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>11:&nbsp; Lifting the net so the fish caught just enough sunlight against the shaded boat floor gave a pleasing image.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide131-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22363" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide131-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide131-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide131-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide131-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide131-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide131-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide131-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide131.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>12:&nbsp; The key points: Keep the sun behind you and to one side so there is no backlight or brighter background.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide141-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22364" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide141-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide141-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide141-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide141-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide141-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide141-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide141-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide141.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>13:&nbsp;&nbsp;The rule of thirds is a camera composition term and if followed generally gives an image that is naturally pleasing to our eyes. Most cameras have a feature where you can turn on GRID or GUIDELINES that are set up for this rule.&nbsp; Turn this feature on if you have it.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide151-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22365" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide151-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide151-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide151-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide151-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide151-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide151-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide151-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide151.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>14:&nbsp; A nice sunrise. Only take sunrise photos when you are able to look at the sun. If you can&#8217;t your camera certainly can&#8217;t.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide161-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22366" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide161-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide161-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide161-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide161-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide161-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide161-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide161-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide161.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>15:&nbsp; The same sunrise with the rule of thirds applies. See how the clouds, sky and ocean each form roughly a third.&nbsp; The sun would have been better placed on the top left intersection with its reflection on the bottom intersection.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide171-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22367" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide171-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide171-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide171-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide171-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide171-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide171-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide171-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide171.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>16:&nbsp; A nice&nbsp; fish photo.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide181-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22368" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide181-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide181-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide181-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide181-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide181-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide181-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide181-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide181.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>17:&nbsp; Now see the rule of thirds applied. The fish&#8217;s head is on the intersection of the lines and the subject on the other intersections. The grass, rocks and water each take up a third of the image.&nbsp; There is even space at the top and bottom and no body parts are cut off.&nbsp; The lighting is even. Note the sun position by looking at the shadows.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide191-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22369" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide191-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide191-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide191-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide191-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide191-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide191-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide191-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide191.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>18:&nbsp; A portrait fish photo</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide201-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22370" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide201-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide201-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide201-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide201-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide201-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide201-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide201-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide201.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>19:&nbsp; Again the trees, water and land all take up a third. Even spacing around subject, nothing cut off.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide211-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22371" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide211-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide211-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide211-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide211-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide211-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide211-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide211-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide211.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>20:&nbsp; Using perspective lines is another technique to add depth to your imagine. It gives a sense of space and a 3D feel to the image.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide221-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22372" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide221-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide221-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide221-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide221-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide221-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide221-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide221-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide221.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>21:&nbsp; Notice how this photo feels like it is a bit more 3D</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide231-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22373" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide231-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide231-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide231-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide231-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide231-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide231-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide231-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide231.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>22:&nbsp; First &#8211; the rule of thirds &#8211; notice how the river, land and sky is divided into thirds and the fish&#8217;s head is on the intersection again</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide241-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22374" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide241-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide241-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide241-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide241-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide241-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide241-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide241-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide241.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>23:&nbsp; Now look at all the perspective lines. These converging lines give a sense of depth and also draws you into the photo.&nbsp; It helps to align these lines with your subject as well.&nbsp; Holding fish at a slight angle is better than flat. Don&#8217;t do the outstretched arms, we all know what you are trying to do. Just hold the fish&#8217;s head out a little to give a nice 3D effect and it still gives your fish a bit larger look.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide251-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22375" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide251-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide251-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide251-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide251-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide251-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide251-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide251-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide251.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>24:&nbsp; A cloudy day allowed an otherwise difficult photo which would have had too many shadows</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide261-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22376" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide261-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide261-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide261-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide261-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide261-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide261-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide261-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide261.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>25:&nbsp; The rule of thirds applied again. River and land divided in thirds, even on the diagonal.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide271-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22377" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide271-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide271-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide271-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide271-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide271-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide271-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide271-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide271.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>26:&nbsp; See how the river provides depth and draws your eyes towards the slightly hidden angler stalking a trout. This photo tells a story and makes you wonder what the outcome was.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide281-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22378" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide281-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide281-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide281-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide281-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide281-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide281-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide281-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide281.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>27:&nbsp; A nicely lit photo with the early morning sun behind the photographer on a slightly cloudy day.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide291-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22379" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide291-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide291-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide291-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide291-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide291-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide291-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide291-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide291.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>28:&nbsp; Subjects on those intersections again, sky bush and river roughly around thirds again, no parts cut off and a bit of landscape to be seen to give context.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide301-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22380" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide301-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide301-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide301-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide301-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide301-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide301-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide301-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide301.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>29:&nbsp; Again the river and landscape is used to provide depth and draw in the viewer.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide311-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22381" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide311-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide311-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide311-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide311-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide311-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide311-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide311-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide311.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>30:&nbsp; Putting it all together. It would be ideal if those lines converged right on that intersection.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide321-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22382" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide321-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide321-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide321-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide321-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide321-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide321-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide321-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide321.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>31:&nbsp; Key takeaways &#8211; Be aware of how the light is going to hit your subject. Frame your subject well, don&#8217;t cut off parts, keep a bit of head and nose room, use the rule of thirds and try to give your photo some depth.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide331-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22383" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide331-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide331-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide331-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide331-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide331-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide331-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide331-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide331.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>32:&nbsp; The most important part is for your photo to tell a story.&nbsp; It still holds true &#8211; a picture says a thousand words.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide341-1024x576.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22384" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide341-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide341-300x169.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide341-768x432.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide341-370x208.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide341-840x473.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide341-410x231.jpg 410w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide341-270x152.jpg 270w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Slide341.jpg 1280w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p><span class="trx_addons_dropcap trx_addons_dropcap_style_2">B</span>ack in February 2020 four of us, myself, Lloyd, Bradley and Wim, belly boated up the Waipapa River. &nbsp; It took about 4.5 hours to get all the way to the first waterfall and only 1.5 hours for the return.&nbsp; Whilst it sounds like a long haul up, the flow is quite gentle, we were taking our time exploring weed beds, deeper channels and areas of good cover.&nbsp;&nbsp;I caught 7 on the way up and 5 on the way back with one of them being a nice fat Brown. The day before, Lloyd and I saw a school&nbsp;of Rudd, that would easily have numbered in the hundreds in all sizes, from 50mm to as big as they get.&nbsp;I caught the Brown on what I consider a reasonable small Rudd pattern.&nbsp;Between us, from memory we landed in excess of 30 fish with a great many lost takes.&nbsp; The river feels almost primordial with the native bush reaching down from high cliffs to the waters edge, it fives you a feeling like a first explorer and&nbsp;that you&#8217;re the first to ever see it.&nbsp; Interestingly te&nbsp;further up river we&nbsp;got the water temperature got cooler and the fish action increased.&nbsp; For those of you who can this has to be a &#8216;bucket list&#8217; fish for the North Island.</p>

<p>lloyd and I (Barrie) found a place alongside Lake Waipapa where we camped for the night.&nbsp; It was only a short walk to the Waipapa River where it enters Lake Waipapa.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200214_1435141-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22388" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200214_1435141-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200214_1435141-300x225.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200214_1435141-768x576.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200214_1435141-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200214_1435141-scaled.jpg 2048w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200214_1435141-370x278.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200214_1435141-840x630.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200214_1435141-410x308.jpg 410w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The view looking up the Waipapa River from the road bridge beckoned us. The plan was for an early start the following day.</p>

<p>An early morning start.&nbsp; There&#8217;s a reasonable track down from the road bridge to launch the belly boats.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1222391-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22390" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1222391-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1222391-300x225.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1222391-768x576.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1222391-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1222391-scaled.jpg 2048w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1222391-370x278.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1222391-840x630.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1222391-410x308.jpg 410w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>For of us, myself, Lloyd and two friends, Bradley and Wim headed (paddled) off on our adventure.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="806" height="605" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_13035320S1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22391" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_13035320S1.jpg 806w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_13035320S1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_13035320S1-768x576.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_13035320S1-370x278.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_13035320S1-410x308.jpg 410w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 806px) 100vw, 806px" /></figure>

<p>Whilst the river has a reasonably deep channel there a lot of weed beds along the sides in parts.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_0902561-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22392" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_0902561-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_0902561-300x225.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_0902561-768x576.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_0902561-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_0902561-scaled.jpg 2048w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_0902561-370x278.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_0902561-840x630.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_0902561-410x308.jpg 410w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>It was along a weed bed that I picked up the first Brown.&nbsp; It was in excellent condition.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1229461-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22393" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1229461-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1229461-300x225.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1229461-768x576.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1229461-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1229461-scaled.jpg 2048w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1229461-370x278.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1229461-840x630.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1229461-410x308.jpg 410w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>We fished the river in many ways &#8211; dry fly dropper, nymphing and wet fly.&nbsp; All methods resulted with fish being caught.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1304001-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22394" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1304001-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1304001-300x225.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1304001-768x576.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1304001-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1304001-scaled.jpg 2048w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1304001-370x278.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1304001-840x630.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1304001-410x308.jpg 410w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The river sides were&nbsp;steep to sheer with vegetation down to the waters edge.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1305401-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22395" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1305401-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1305401-300x225.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1305401-768x576.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1305401-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1305401-scaled.jpg 2048w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1305401-370x278.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1305401-840x630.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1305401-410x308.jpg 410w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>The vegetation overhanging the river provided great cover for the fish and we made good use prospecting these areas.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1230061-1024x768.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-22396" srcset="https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1230061-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1230061-300x225.jpg 300w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1230061-768x576.jpg 768w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1230061-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1230061-scaled.jpg 2048w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1230061-370x278.jpg 370w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1230061-840x630.jpg 840w, https://nsff.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/20200215_1230061-410x308.jpg 410w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>It took us about 4.5 hours to paddle and fish our way up to this, the first waterfall.&nbsp; We had it to ourselves until the last few moments we some geriatrics on canoes came paddling up. I say geriatric as they we totally &#8216;not fit for purpose&#8217; with one almost drowning in the big hole just below the small waterfall. Some no life jackets and the others had jackets that were too big or done up. This ain&#8217;t a place for an accident that&#8217;s for sure.&nbsp; Anyway apart from all that, as I said in the introduction, the Waipapa River has to be on you North Island bucket list.&nbsp; Do it again &#8211; I sure hope so!</p>
